VTL Shelf Firmware Upgrade Best Practices

Symptoms

Starting with version 4.1.2, the Virtual Tape Library (VTL) firmware updates also contain shelf firmware updates.  If the shelf firmware in use is older than the version contained in the VTL firmware, an action will be generated stating that the shelf firmware needs to be updated.

Example:
1460 - Shelf firmware needs upgrade. New firmware is available for upgrade.

VTL Shelf Firmware Upgrade Best Practices

Solution

WARNING: Do not upgrade shelf firmware while running the 5.2.2 release due to Bug ID 256293. This bug is fixed in the 5.2.3 release.

The upgrade process does not need to be performed immediately and can be scheduled for a maintenance window. Upgrading shelf firmware will take approximately 10 minutes per shelf.  Shelves are upgraded sequentially.  For example, on a VTL with 4 shelves, the process can take up to 40 minutes. Before performing the upgrade, verify that the following have been done:

  • Make sure the VTL is idle.  There should be no backups, exports, or clones.
  • Make sure that the backup application will not initiate communications with the VTL by shutting the application down.
  • Make a backup copy of the VTL configuration.
  • Unload all virtual tapes from drives.
  • Wait 10 minutes before proceeding with the upgrade after any activity on the VTL.

To upgrade the firmware, click on the Resolve link of the action to go to the Shelf Firmware Upgrade page.  You can navigate to the same page by selecting Support Tools under Configuration Tasks and choosing the Shelf Firmware Upgrade tab.

WARNING: Do not interrupt the power to the VTL during the upgrade process.

WARNING: Unload all virtual tapes from drives and wait 10 minutes before proceeding.

WARNING: Do not perform any other tasks on the VTL while the upgrade is in progress either from a separate admin session or using the CLI.  The VTL should be idle during the upgrade process.

  1. Follow the action workflow by clicking on the resolve link. (or use the previous steps to navigate directly)
  2. In the list select the shelves to upgrade or check the top checkbox to select all shelves
  3. Click the Apply button
  4. A screen will be shown stating that "A Shelf firmware download session is currently in progress."
  5. The GUI will continue to refresh until the upgrades are complete.
  6. When the upgrades are complete, the GUI will display the shelf firmware upgrade page.  The shelves upgraded will show the new version.

Note:
It is possible that during the upgrade actions will be generated for Raid Group errors.  During the upgrade ignore these actions as they should resolve themselves when the upgrade is complete.

When the firmware upgrades are complete, if after 10 minutes not all of the RAID Groups error actions are resolved, perform these steps:

  1. Wait for 10 minutes after shelf firmware upgrade has completed.
  2. Power off the VTL head.
  3. Power off the disk shelves.
  4. Wait for 1 minute.
  5. Power up the disk shelves.
  6. Wait for 2 minutes.
  7. Power up the VTL head.
